Windermere Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Windermere Island is an island located in The Bahamas which about five miles long and is noted for its beaches. It is connected to Eleuthera by a short bridge protected by a guardhouse. The Island is private and only accessible to homeowners as well as guests and is renowned as a private retreat for people from all over the world. The adjoining waters and flats of Savannah Sound are considered to be a premier bonefishing location. Although seldom mentioned in articles and guidebooks, Windermere's five-mile long beach is protected by a five mile long reef which is rich in fish and underwater flora, the beach was considered by Jacques-Yves Cousteau to be one the two most beautiful in the world.
The island is populated with private homes and the Club at Windermere, a private club offering a restaurant, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. Diana Princess of Wales holidayed in one of the houses, and enjoyed the beach in Savannah Sound from where a member of the paparazzi snapped the infamous picture of a pregnant Princess in a swimsuit. Famous Residents Include The Cousteau family (Jacques-Yves Cousteau), Mariah Carey, The Duke and Duchess of Abercorn (James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn), India Hicks and The Johnson Family (Lyndon B. Johnson). Members of England's royal family visit the island regularly, often arriving by Private Helicopter.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were married in late April 2008 at her private residence on the island[1].
