[edit] DVD + General Question

So has anyone here seen this film? It seems almost unknown - it doesn't even have 5 votes on IMDB. The Japanese DVDs are extraordinarily expensive - the standard one is over $60USD, and the "special edition" DVD is over $300USD. Are there any plans to release this film in a cheaper DVD in some other country (prefferably with English subtitles)? Really, I'm just wondering who exactly put this page up and how they had heard of the film, since it seems like it's almost unseen because of the limited theatrical release and very expensive DVD. The only reason I heard of it was because Yuriy Norshtein participated in it. I would really like to see it as this is the first animation he's done since 1979's Tale of Tales (not counting the unfinished Overcoat), but it seems like I may not have a chance in this lifetime unless I get ridiculously rich and learn Japanese. :P Esn 01:07, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes I've seen it. It's available at amazon.co.jp for €44, a little less second-hand (see added link). I'll be using it in a presentation about the Basho [renku] on which it's based, at the World Haiku Festival in India early 2008. In Japan, renku is a minority interest, and even more so overseas, so it would seem to make little economic sense for a version with English subtitles to be prepared. I've also added a link to a (rather poor-quality) excerpt on YouTube.com. Incidentally the link to the English subtitles isn't working. Yumegusa (talk) 20:07, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I've just fixed a bundle of typos in the translation. Shirane's published translation includes lineation which clearly indicates the distinction between chōku and tanku (long and short verses, which he shows as 3- and 2-line stanzas respectively). The translation here should be fixed to reflect this. I'll do it when I find time if no-one else gets here before me. Yumegusa (talk) 15:59, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Poem: copyright alert!

Any reason to believe the translation by Haruo Shirane featured here is not in breach of copyright? It's lifted from Haruo Shirane, Traces of Dreams: Landscape, Cultural Memory and the Poetry of Basho, Stanford University Press, 1998, ISBN 978-0804730983--Yumegusa (talk) 23:45, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, you might be right. I made that edit a long time ago, and I actually had no idea that the translation was published somewhere; the translation was sent to me by the director of the film with a note saying that "Haruo Shirane" had translated it. Looking back on it, I guess it was a violation of copyright to have posted this here... but I didn't realize it at the time.
Now the question is, the poem "Winter Days" itself is obviously not subject to any copyright. Is there any English translation of it that is in the public domain? Esn (talk) 20:32, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Well you could contact Shirane, asking permission to use the translation. His email is on the internet. There is (I think) one other translation but it's equally subject to copyright.--Yumegusa (talk) 11:36, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Resolved this by replacing the translation

[edit] Animators

Just double Checking, On section The Animated segments isn't animator No. 7 supposed to be Tatsuya Ishida? On IMDB they are linked... maybe I should just fix it? sorry I'm new to this, don't know what's polite. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.73 (talk) 22:28, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Is that the same person, though? The wikipedia article doesn't mention anything about any animation work, so maybe these are two different people. Anyway, I'll change the name but add "(animator)" just in case.Esn (talk) 20:27, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
