She was brought up in Epsom in the UK and married an Antarctic biologist, and then moved to the USA where she worked as a Librarian.
In 1966 she returned to live in the Shetland Islands where she gave birth to a son. She later went to the Republic of Uganda. at the time of the Idi Amin Dada coup, and went to the Republic of Kenya, she later went to the Republic of Malawi
