William Salt

William Salt (1808-1863) was a Banker in Stafford and London and a genealogist and antiquary in whose memory the William Salt Library in Stafford was founded.
He was the son of John Stevenson Salt (High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1838), head of Stevenson Salt & Co (Established 1737) Bankers of London and Stafford, and became a partner in the Bank which later merged with Lloyds Banking Co.
He was an avid collector of topographical and genealogical books and records, particularly those relating to Staffordshire. After his death his extensive collection was catalogued and donated to County of Stafford, which financed the opening in 1872 of the William Salt Library in Market Square, Stafford.
His nephew was Sir Thomas Salt Bt. of Sandon, near Eccleshall, Staffordshire.
