William 'Will' Smith (born July 3, 1973) is the main character from the 1990s television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and is portrayed by Will Smith.

[edit] Character Background

William Smith was born in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1973 to Lou Smith and Viola Smith. When he was five years old his father abandoned him and his mother but returned when Will was in late adolescence. Will grew up with his mother in the ghetto in a project house. When he was seventeen years old he got into a fight with a teenager named Omar causing his mother to send him to live with his uncle and aunt in Bel Air, California. At first he and his family had trouble adjusting to one another. He was later considered a valuable member in the family and earned respect through his community as the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air."

In the last episode, Will decides to stay in Bel-Air instead of going back to Philadelphia with his family so he can finish at UCLA[citation needed].

[edit] Personality

He often has spouts with his cousin Carlton, whom he sees as not quite "black." Despite their differences, Will grows extremely close to the Banks family, even turning down his mother when she offers to let him move back in with her again in Philly.

During one of Will's trips back to his old neighborhood, he confronts the old park bully, Omar, to restore his damaged reputation. When Will challenges him, he is startled when a reformed Omar refuses to fight. Omar misses Will, and through him Will gradually realizes that his reputation is not important, and returns to Bel-Air. At the conclusion of the story's run, he remains in Los Angeles to finish up his last year of college.
