Wilhelm Heidkamp

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maat Wilhelm Heidkamp was a German sailor who fought in World War I. He was part of the crew of SMS Seydlitz during the Battle of the Dogger Bank in January 1915 when the ship was hit by gunfire from HMS Lion. Heidkamp prevented his ship exploding by flooding the magazines. He was severely injured and eventually died of his wounds after the end of World War I. The World War II German destroyer Z21 was named Wilhelm Heidkamp in his honour.[1]
