Wilfredo Fernandez (1960 - ) - better known simply as Wilfredo - is a Spanish singer and guitarist.
Born Wilfredo Paco Jose Rodriguez Fernandez in Granada, Andalucia, Spain, he is the fourth son of Paola and Vicente Fernandez. A popular child star in the flamenco tradition, known as "El Niño de Granada" (The Child from Granada) or "El Cuarto Chico" (the Fourth Boy), he grew to become one of Andalucia's most prominent musical stars during the latter years of the Franco dictatorship.
While performing at the 1977 Benidorm International Song Festival there was an assassination attempt on his life. An audience member fired three rounds of bullets, narrowly missing Wilfred. The gunman was never found. Among rumours in the Spanish media was a story that it was another - slightly older - male singer had arranged the shooting, but those that rumour was unfounded. Incidentally, Alfonso Pahino won that year's prize with a song entitled Aléjate.
With a vocal range spanning five octaves, he is gaining popularity in the Anglophile world.
