[edit] Premise
Thor is an origin story, taking inspiration from Biblical themes. Screenwriter Mark Protosevich said, "It will be mythic, but also bear the unmistakable qualities of a Marvel movie, an epic fantasy adventure."[2] Gladiator and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will be an influence of the storyline.[3][4] The film will not take place in modern times, but neither will it be set entirely in Asgard.[5]
[edit] Cast
Kevin McKidd denied rumors he was to portray Thor, but he was under consideration for an unnamed supporting role. In addition he also claimed the filmmakers were searching for someone 19—20 years old for Thor,[6] a role Tyler Mane which has expressed interest in.[7] However, Vaughn was currently looking at an unknown actor.[8]
[edit] Production
Sam Raimi originally envisioned the idea to do the film after Darkman (1990), meeting Stan Lee and the two pitched Thor to 20th Century Fox. Raimi recalled, "[Fox] thought it was gonna be some Hercules movie or something!"[9] Thor was abandoned until April 1997, when Marvel Studios was beginning to rapidly expand.[10] In May 2000, Marvel Studios brought Artisan Entertainment to help finance the film, but Thor was still laboring in development hell by April 2002, and in June 2004, the project still had yet to be optioned by a studio.[11][12][13] However, Sony Pictures Entertainment purchased the film rights, and in December 2004, David S. Goyer was in negotiations to write the script, also hoping to direct.[14] For reasons unknown Goyer wasn't hired, and Mark Protosevich, a fan of the Thor comic book, signed to write the script in April 2006, while Paramount Pictures acquired the rights from Sony.[2][15]
Matthew Vaughn had expressed interest in directing Thor when he was set to direct X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). After being impressed with his work on Stardust (2007), Marvel Studios signed Vaughn to direct in August 2007. The filmmakers were hoping to have filming start before the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.[3][16] However, in January 2008, Marvel Entertainment reached an interim comprehensive agreement with the Writers Guild of America that would put writers immediately back to work on various projects that were under the company's development.[17] Vaughn was pressured to film Thor in Hollywood, but demanded for the film to be completely shot in England, starting in late 2008.[18] Vaughn then rewrote Protosevich's script in order to bring down the budget to $150 million. Protosevich's first draft had a cost of $300 million to produce.[1]
Ilan Eshkeri, who composed Layer Cake and Stardust, will collaborate with Vaughn once more on Thor.[19] However, Vaughn explained in March 2008, that he's uncertain if the film will actually get made, claiming he's awaiting word from Marvel.[8] In May 2008, it was announced Vaughn was no longer attached to direct, as his contract expired in December 2007, and Protosevich was doing another rewrite.[4]
[edit] Promotion
The film will be released on June 4, 2010.[4] In April 2007, Sega signed to produce a video game, originally aiming for a summer 2008 release, they are willing to wait longer for the film to get made.[20]
[edit] Sequel
In August 2006, Zak Penn was hired to write the script for an Avengers film.[21] Iron Man director Jon Favreau said he would like to direct the film, which would be a crossover to fictional universes in other upcoming Marvel films such as Thor, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America. He also explained that Marvel has told him that "they're pretty clear on wanting to do it with the actors who’ve established the roles or to not do it at all. I think it’s a good idea if you use the characters established in the other franchises that then come together for an event."[22]
