Several entities have been called the "National Academy" in the United States, which has led to uncertainty as to which one he belonged. However, he was probably a member of the National Academy of Design (founded, 1825). Other organizations which have been called the "National Academy" include:
- American Academy of Arts and Sciences (founded, 1780)
- The American Academy of Arts and Letters (founded, 1904)
