Talk:Willem Barentsz

I've contacted the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, asking about the potential chance to get CC-licensed photographs of their collection Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 21:21, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Leaving it as it is for now, but I'm not 100% on whether the Bear Island incident was the first or third trip. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 01:41, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not entirely sure but I know of the incident from something I've read that was based on the diary from Gerrit de Veer. Since he didn't participate in the first voyage that would suggest the incident took place on the third voyage. But, as said, it was based on, it wasn't the diary itself. - Yeah, though I saw a journal reference the other day while looking stuff up that said somethingalong the lines of "since De Veer wasn't present on this voyage, it seems likely that Barentsz had provided him with copies of his logs" (not specific to the bear incident, something else I don't remember). The book currently used as a citation definitely says the earlier year, but web references seem to suggest the later year. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 09:56, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Naming
Since the Dutch use the same alphabet, I can think of no reason we should refer to him as Barents rather than Barentsz - yes English texts in the past centuries have taken it upon themselves to anglicise the name - but I don' think WP is doing anybody a service be furthering that. Willem Barents should point to Willem Barentsz - not the other way around. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 21:27, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
