[edit] Translation

The point about translation is important because in order to make wikipedia content accessible to a user, it needs to be translated into a language he or she speaks. Kappa 23:51, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Response

Firstly, that does not address the "lucky enough" internet access point.

Secondly, and more importantly, you are undermining the entire point of my essay. Notice this is not in the article section, but is an essay to point out, and hopefully counteract, the indiscrimanent dumping of garbage information in Wikipedia. What does wiktionary have to do with anything?! I am not trying to address translation; I am not trying to address internet access. Did you even read the essay before you started editing?

The point of this essay is similar to WP:VSCA, a combination rant about notability and pointers as to guidelines for information quality. Translation has nothing to do with the issue.

If you have a Wikipedia essay you wish to pen, then by all means, G-d Bless, go ahead, but if it is not germane to the nucleus of the point of "Wikipedia is not Google" then it does not belong here! Thank you. -- Avi 00:12, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • If you are telling people not to add information because it available somewhere else, they should at least take into account that "somewhere else" is not necessarily accessible to all. You might not care if someone is deprived of information because they don't speak the right language or because they have no internet access, but people reading this essay should be aware of this consequence. • Please read WP:NOT. We are an encyclopædia, not a dumpster. -- Avi 00:25, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copied from Talk Page

Kappa, WP:NG is NOT an article, it is an essay. As such the {{disputed}} tag is not applicable. Please follow this link [1]. Notice what it says on top: Essays about Wikipedia and related topics. These are not policy and are primarily opinion pieces . So, of course you can dispute it, but the dispute tag is neither applicable, nor called for. By all means, write a counter-essay, but please stop vandalizing WP:NG. Thank you, -- Avi 00:22, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • As this essay is in the wikipedia namespace, you do not WP:OWN it, so I will continue to attempt to make it more NPOV and less misleading. Kappa 00:37, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
    • Very true, but what does WP:NPOV have to do with it? WP:NPOV applies to articles, reader-facing templates, categories and portals, as it says on its page; not essays. Please, Kappa, follow Wikipedia rules, not your own personal vendetta. -- Avi 00:40, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
      • Well anyway I'll working on the misleading aspect. You are telling people that information can be found elsewhere, but that's not the case for everyone. Kappa 00:53, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
    • My point is that Wikipedia is not the place for it; regardless of alternative locations. -- Avi 00:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
      • Then why mention the alternate locations at all? Kappa 01:02, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
    • To make a point. This is an essay, an opinion piece, a piece of advice from me to you (in general, not you specifically). -- Avi 01:03, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
      • Well "you" suddenly changes from a user "you can find anything" to a contributor "There are plenty of webhosts... to host whatever information you want". Kappa 01:08, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
    • Aha. Maybe that is the issue. Kappa, this is ONLY addressed to contibutors :-) -- Avi 01:11, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
      • Essays are fine. They are not subject to {{NPOV}} or {{disputed}}. They can be edited, just like everything else on Wikipedia, but if Kappa has an issue with essays, I recommend that he just avoids them, or writes a counter-essay, or puts Category:Wikipedia essays up for CFD. [edit] I object

  • What is the point of this page? This can't be a real policy. I think it's bogus. Can I nominate it for deletion? -- JJay 05:16, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
    • Yes you can, just put {{subst:mfd}} at the top and follow the instructions. Stifle 20:50, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
