i've created a template for the tracks used in V8 Supercar rounds, based on the F1 track template. Being rather new to this should I just add it to the project page for all to see or do I need some sort of approval Cheebung 18:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Is the series (and our title article) V8 Supercar or V8 Supercars? This confusion has also led to us having both 2006 V8 Supercars season and 2006 V8 Supercar Season articles, which I've just proposed to be merged. --Scott Davis Talk 09:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I think the name should be changed to either "V8 Supecars Australia", or just "V8 Supercars". Curently it is titled V8 Supercar, which to me talks about the actual car and not the series. I believe that the series is actually titled V8 Supercars Australia, and as the article seems to be about the series/category primarily (in the same way as Australian Football League, for example) I think the article should be named as such. To make things more confusing, the opening line of the page uses V8 Supercars, and I put the 'Australia' part on my new infobox on the left. This is essentially the same issue I raised two sections above, with no response. The website is www.v8supercar.com.au (no 's'), and it appears that website uses the singular V8 Supercar in the names of its two series. V8 Supercars Australia (with an 's') is the name of the organisation formerly known as AVESCO that runs the series. Yeah... kinda complicates the issue more. The artcile seems to talk about three things: the series, the body that runs the series, and the car itself. As I see it, all three things require different names! My personal preference would be to name it V8 Supercars Australia, and talk about the series and cars within that... much in the same way that AFL is under the Australian Football League and not Australian rules football. It just happens that the "league" (series) and "body" have the same name in this case.

Also, I thought I'd add a new section because I realised nobody had responded to your appeal earlier, and thought maybe it would get more notice with a new section. Cheers, Seth Cohen 13:34, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Does anybody have experience with year/season templates? How do we roll over the {{V8 Supercar Teams}} from the 2006 season to 2007? My guess is that we subst: it into articles that will not get the 2007 version, before starting to change the template, and ensure the text of any articles where info changes contains the 2006 info. Hi. I have started an article on the 2007 V8 Supercar season based on the layout of the 2007 Formula One season. However I'm not sure whether to include a Results and Standing section like of the Formula One page due to the number of drivers that will drive in the season (60+ due to enduros). I recommend that template:V8 race report infobox be renamed as [[template:V8 Supercar race report infobox]] (or even just template:V8 Supercar race report, i.e. without the word "infobox"), for consistency with template:V8 Supercar Team, template:V8 Supercar Teams and template:V8 Supercar Driver ? [edit] Elfin car photos

I don't think this manufacturer is competing with it's current cars but I'm hopeful someone out there is going to the one of the Motor Shows around Australia and can take some photos of either the Clubman or Streamliner (including the 50th Anniversary edition) as there are no free use ones (as far as I can tell).
Also historic photos for the Elfin car page would be great and creation of articles for the historic Elfin models if anybody is keen and there are no other priorities. thanks - Ctbolt 01:48, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I should have some photos of these that I can help out with. Elfin was the feature marque at the 2006 Easter Historics at Mallala and there was a good entry of historic Elfin racing cars, and the new Clubman and Streamliners were the course cars. [edit] Changes in Templates

Hi, I'm currently making some changes over on the WikiProject Motorsport Assessment Page. Look in the statistics section. Only 240 articles have the template WikiProject Motorsport on it. I'm thererfore going to propose something (I think this has been discussed a while back). Can every single Motorsport article have the template on it's talk page. My reasoning for this is that some drivers have only the Formula One template on the article. However, surely (by the way, this goes for virtually all articles), they haven't got to Formula One someway. They haven't just been thrown into F1, I don't think any drivers done that. They've gone through other forms of Motorsport. Therefore, surely the Wikipedia Motorsport template is needed for every single Motorsport article?. I'm going to do a vote on this (on this page, plus the Motorsport project and all the child projects) so we can get a decision on this. I notice that User:Greg the White Falcon has recently added Category:V8 Supercar tracks to many/most of the current V8 Supercar circuit articles. Another approach (as used by WP:F1 for the Formula One circuits) would be to add the category into template:V8 Supercar tracks; then it doesn't need to be explicitly added into each circuit article. Of course, that means the category is only applied to articles which include the template, which would presumably only be the current circuits. So, if you want former circuits to be included in the category, then you'd need to add the category explicitly into those articles OR update the template to list former circuits (like template:Formula One circuits and template:Champ Car Tracks do). [edit] Standard width for driver infoboxes

There are numerous driver articles which contain multiple infoboxes, for the different series the driver has competed in. One issue is that the various driver infoboxes are different widths, which means that the infoboxes don't always "stack" neatly - contrast Olivier Gendebien (all infoboxes the same width) with Julian Bailey (different width infoboxes). The current infobox widths are:

  • 25 em: F1 driver, A1GP driver, V8 Supercar driver, WRC driver
  • 24 em: Former F1 driver, Former Champ Car driver, Former F3 driver
  • 22 em: BTCC driver, BTCC alumnus, DTM driver, Junior series driver, Pickup Truck driver, Infobox racing driver
  • 270px (which is very close to 24em): all the NASCAR driver infobox templates

I propose that we standardise the width of all driver infoboxes at 24em, to improve the visual appearance of articles containing multiple infoboxes. Please leave comments here. DH85868993 14:26, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Excellent resources include the FORIX website (paysite unfortunately), also try The Nostaglia Forum, one of the former AtlasF1 chat forums now owned by Autosport, refer the Autosport website, or if looking for something hardcover, Chevron produced a history of the AGP from 1928-1985 but that's been over 15 years out of print. [edit] When did V8 Supercars start?

I'm confused! The infobox in V8 Supercar says the series was founded in 1997. But template:Australian Touring Car Racing shows the V8 Supercar series starting in 1999. In addition, 2001 V8 Supercar championship claims to be the 6th runnning of the series (which would suggest the first one was in 1996); 2004 and 2005 both claim to be the 9th running (probably just a copy-and-paste error) and 2006 and 2007 both claim to be the 11th running (again, probably a copy-and-paste error). Think I've had this discussion before... Need to take a broader view. V8Supercar was a marketting tag originally, brought in prior to the 1997 season as an all-in catchphrase, to supersede the myriad of names in existance, Touring Cars, Group A, V8s, V8 Touring Cars, etc... The series was called at the time, the Australian Touring Car Championship (I'll abbreviate it to ATCC), a title dating back to 1960. The category managers however wanted to rebirth the series, but leaving the technical regulations alone after the extensive re-launch in 1993 which banned all-bar the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon apart from a 12 month grandfather clause for the E30 M3 BMW. The ATCC title continued in used until the series went through a restructure after the 1998 season, and the ATCC title was dropped and replaced with the Shell Championship Series in 1999 in order that anyone describing the series could only do it by mentioning the series sponsor. Shell however discontinued its sponsorship three years later and the title was replaced with V8Supercar Championship Series. The original ATCC trophy is still presented to the winner of the V8Supercar Championship Series. 1998 was the 39th Australian Touring Car Championship. The first V8Supercar Championship Series was 1999, this year is the ninth V8Supercar Championship Series, but as the title dates back to 1997 it is the eleventh V8Supercar season. The difference mainly reflects during the 1997 & 1998 seasons, the Touring car Championship did not include all of the rounds, whereas from 1999 onwards the stand alone events, most notable the Bathurst 1000, was included in the championship.
There isn't a simple answer to how to fix it within Wiki-language. While V8Supercar started as just marketting re-badge it has now become the accepted title and Australian Touring Car Championship has fallen into disuse, so much so someone tried to steal it for their own series a few years ago. Not precisely sure how to suggest to fix it. V8Supercar season would cover each season from 1999 ownwards, and with difficulty from 1997. V8Supercar themselves claim back to 1993 the year of the V8 regulation change. Australian Touring Car Championship would cover 1960 to 1996.

I notice the recent creation of Category:Former V8 Supercar tracks as a subcategory of Category:V8 Supercar tracks. Something this project may wish to consider is that the "tracks" categories of several other series (e.g. Category:Champ Car race tracks, Category:Formula One circuits and Category:NASCAR tracks) don't distinguish between current and former tracks, i.e. both current and former tracks are included in the same category. For V8 Supercars, We need to decide whether we want the point amounts for each roundon the leaderboard table eg. 2006 season or whether it should just show their position for the round eg. 2007 V8 Supercar season#Drivers Championship. Personally, I prefer the 2007 version, because it looks far more structured Shaizakopf 22:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

It's easy for F1 to make it looks structured because the points are the same each race you go to, and have changed little in almost 60 years of competition. The ATCC has changed if not every year, then on average, every second year. And sometimes complete philosophical changes. I've you'd won a round by blitzing all three races then it's worthy quite a bit more than if you stumbled into the round win on consistency with a sixth, fourth and second while everyone else had problems. Additionally some years points earned and round position do not co-relate, for example have a look at the newly added 1981 Australian Touring Car Championship series. Colin Bond picked up 9 points in every round he contested, essentially third for the 'round' of all seven races, and yet, his finishing position was never higher than sixth. It is not as simple as saying 'This looks better". The real question is: What do we want the table to reflect, points or race position? Some years it will do both quite happily, some we will have to choose one or the other. --Falcadore 03:21, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

I belatedly noticed, or forgot it existed previously, that this Wikiproject already had a format for V8Supercar races, although it has to date only been used once. I suspect that it's over the top to do it for just this project - better to nominate an article now and then to the Australian collaboration of the fortnight. The Australian television article was nominated by members of WikiProject Australian television and got quite a lot of work. I don't know how much was from regular contributors to that project. ACOTF is not overrun by nominations, so there's no outstanding need for finer grained collaborations. Cat:Motorsport in Australia is getting full again. I'm planning to create a subcategory for articles related to the Gold Cost Champcar race (Lexmark Indy 300, 2002 Honda Indy 300, 2003 Lexmark Indy 300, etc) but I'm not sure what to call it. The "obvious" name is Cat:Lexmark Indy 300 but, as per the discussion below I think it's probably not a good idea to include the sponsor's name as part of the category name, and that a more "generic" name like Cat:Gold Coast Indy(car) race or Cat:Surfers Paradise Champcar race would be better. The original generic name in use at the events inception was the Gold Coast Indy Car Grand Prix. Because the event was held in Australia it was able to hang on to the Indy portion of its name during the court ordered moratorium on the word 'Indy' and 'Indycar' at the height of the CART/IRL wars. --Falcadore (talk) 10:36, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm guessing it was deleted because it was probably considered too insignificant a subject to warrant an article. There are some guidelines as to what is considered imprtant enough for articles or not. Kart clubs, unless the have some special national significance I'd guess would be considered too small, but you would have to ask the editor concerned. --Falcadore 03:00, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion of WikiProject Motorsport subproject reorganization and its changes to WP:AUSMOTOR

I'm bringing this up here due to the discussion currently going on at WP:MOTOR, which some in this project might not be aware of. I have brought up a proposal for the Project that would reorganize all subprojects under the WP:MOTOR umbrella to be based off of the form of motorsport, rather then specific series, like WP:WRC, or nationality, such as WP:AUSMOTOR. This is designed to prevent large amounts of overlap inbetween projects as well as to streamline projects to cover all popular forms of motorsport.

The current proposal would however greatly alter WP:AUSMOTOR. Due to this projects main area of expertise, V8 Supercars and its supporting series, being similar to WP:British Motorsport's concentration on the British Touring Car Championship, the concept is for the two to be merged into a new WP:Touring Car Racing, and joined by various other major touring car championships.

I realize WP:AUSMOTOR does infact go beyond V8 Supercars, and covers a wide spectrum of other areas of motorsport. However I believe these areas are also covered by other projects (such as WP:Sports Car Racing and the proposed WP:Formula Racing), and therefore could be moved to their care in order to standize series that use similar formulas.

This is by no means an attempt to shut down your project, nor is it even a plan. It is merely a discussion for all members of subprojects beneath WP:MOTOR, and we'd welcome an input, suggestions, or opinions you'd like to put forth on this proposal. Maybe biographical articles on retired drivers - where there is less likelihood of ongoing edit wars and vandalism. Perhaps articles like Allan Moffat, Colin Bond and Bob Morris. [edit] Sponsor team names

Can I just say at this point, can we not ever again use a sponsor based team name for an article title? With Supercheap Auto, Autobarn and Toll all shifting sponsorships to new teams that's three teams requiring new team names. Already Supercheap Auto Racing has been shifted to Paul Weel Racing, but now Autobarn Racing needs a new name (provisionally it will be shifted to Rod Nash Racing which presently #REDIRECTS to Autobarn Racing), and of course Toll HSV Dealer Team has lost Toll. This is a situation that will come up again when Brad Jones Racing lose BOC as a sponsor.

Moving the pages is not that big a deal, but redirecting all the links will take a long while.

I'd suggest "Perkins Engineering". The results section of Larry's article suggests that was the "default" team name when the team was "between sponsors". For most recent years, there are at least 6 or 7 motorsport-related articles in each "<year> in Australia" category (e.g. in Category:2007 in Australia, there are 10). I propose to move these articles from the "<year> in Australia" category into a (new) "<year> in Australian motorsport" subcategory, similar to the "<year> in Australian rules football" and "<year> in Australian football (soccer)" categories. With the new V8 season about to get underway, there are still a few outstanding members of the 2008 season without articles.

As per the published list at V8 Supercar's website, Here! we are still short of articles for Michael Caruso, Garth Walden, Ford Rising Stars Racing (also known as Decina Racing) and Walden Motorsport. Plus an article on Tony D'Alberto Racing racing would also be good as they have taken over the running of the RNR franchise on RNR's behalf, the task previously performed as the Autobarn team by Independent Racing Cars Australia. If Team Dynamik do re-appear after the court case then the article for them could be tackled afterwards, but Wikipedia should not attempt to pre-empt the case. The content increase during the off-season has been excellent. If anyone would like to volunteer to get these articles up and running by Clipsal, please jump in and say so, if nobody does, or cares, I'll try to add them myself. --Falcadore (talk) 03:17, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New layout proposal for V8 Supercar Teams template

I'd like to propose a new layout for the V8 Supercar Teams template. The current one is a table. I'd like to change it to a Navbox and format it a bit differently so that the team names stand out from the driver names. I think that will improve its readability.

Looks good. Complaint I have, and its not reflective of your work, is that Supercheap Auto Racing should be referred to as Paul Morris Motorsport as only Ingall's car will have significant SuperCheap signage with Morris' car remaining much as it was last year with BWS & Sirromet signage. --Falcadore (talk) 06:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

If you're looking for additional comment, I'd not wait further. One suggestion, PMM are running Supercheap on both cars, but now Brad Jones Racing aren't if BOC on one and WOW on the other, so maybe the more generic Brad Jones Racing needs to be used. --Falcadore (talk) 09:16, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I think it's inaccurate to refer to the pre-1973 "Bathurst 1000" races as the "19xx Bathurst 1000". Consider 1967 Gallaher 500. It starts like this:

1967 Bathurst 1000
Previous: 1966 Next: 1968
The 1967 Gallaher 500 was the eighth running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race...


I think the text and succession box should be changed to:

1967 Gallaher 500
Previous: 1966 Next: 1968
The 1967 Gallaher 500 was the eighth running of the touring car race which would later become known as the Bathurst 1000...

OK. I've made the changes. For the races which were actually run at Bathurst, I simplified things a bit and just replaced "Bathurst 1000" with "Bathurst 500", e.g. I changed the lede of 1967 Gallaher 500 to read:
The 1967 Gallaher 500 was the eighth running of the Bathurst 500 touring car race

[edit] Problem with V8 Supercar Driver template

We seem to be having a problem with the V8 Supercar Driver template. If you look at the articles for Mark Skaife and Mark Winterbottom you'll see that some of the details are blank even though they're provided. Can anyone help with this? --Fruv (talk) 00:06, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

For starters - the template does not have a 'last season' line, or vehicle, or races, basically the additional information just isn't in the template. I've fixed some of it. Please check to confirm? --Falcadore (talk) 01:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
