Need help identifying ships related to West Virginia. You may even end up creating the ship articles yourself. Category:United States Navy West Virginia-related ships is a good starting point, these have been located.
You can find photos here http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/ as well as DANFS sites one is http://www.history.navy.mil/nhc1.html anything on a DANFS site is the work of the US government and public domain. You can cut-paste and WikiFi it pretty easy. Just put {{DANFS}} at the bottom of the page so people know it came from DANFS
What you are looking for:
- Ships named for people from West Virigina such as the USS Barr (DE-576). You may need to click on the entry for the name to identify the person if it doesn't say in the main article.
- Ships named for Counties such as the USS Mineral County (LST-988). All county named ships, are for all counties in the US. There are 4 Mineral Counties, WV is one of them.
- Ships named for towns, some times they are named for one, sometimes named for all. USS Charleston (LKA-113) says it is named for South Carolina, and not West Virginia. You may do a little research and find that it is really named for both.
- SHips named for rivers such as the USS Kanawha (AO-1)
