Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Shields/Templates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most shields on Commons have had their text converted to paths to permit them to display correctly. Unfortunately, this makes them more difficult to edit. You can instead download and modify these template shields. (You will need to convert the new text to path before uploading; in Inkscape, the correct shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + C.)

To use these shields, you need a vector editing program, such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (which is free). You will also need the Roadgeek fonts. In most cases the template will have the right font set up for you.

These shields should never be used in article space.

Check with your local DOT for any standards that may override the national SHS; some states specify larger numbers or different series font.

[edit] U.S. routes

[edit] Connecticut

One or two character shields use Roadgeek Font D, two-digit plus letter or three-digit (100s only) use Font C, three-digit (200+) or four-digit use Font B.

[edit] Kansas

[edit] Maryland

[edit] Oklahoma

Note: While a template exists for one- and two-digit routes, it is inaccurate. It is simpler to copy the desired shield out of Image:Meat cleavers.svg, which is more accurate.

These templates require that you add white shapes behind the number to remove the state outline from the loops of numbers and areas just around the numbers.

*Erie Co. uses Helvetica for their route shields. You can simply replace the number and upload without converting to path, and the shield will look correct on Commons (even if it doesn't on your computer) because the SVG uses the Nimbus Sans font, a clone of Helvetica, which the Wikimedia servers have installed. Most Linux distros include this font. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can also use any Helvetica clone (Swiss and Arial are probably close enough) and convert to path to create the shield.
