[edit] Request: Guidelines/steps for updating other's W* Images

I run into a lot of images on WP or WM which I'm able to optimize for size or clarity. But I have no proper way to re-upload these images without disturbing the licensing already in place nor messing with captions or whatnot. How about a simple tutorial to do the same?
