The term wallpaper or desktop background refers to a photo or graphic image used as a background on your desktop screen for your PC. Microsoft calls it a wallpaper and the Mac operating system refers to it as a desktop pattern. The difference between wallpapers and widescreen wallpapers is that they are just wider images to fit your screen without any stretching.
[edit] Formats
The typical resolution sizes used for widescreen monitors are 2560x1600, 1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1440x900, and 1280x800 but there are some exceptions to these.
[edit] Dimensions
Many screen resolutions are in a 4:3 ratio, but widescreen (16:9 or 16:10) monitors have different aspect ratio requirements for wallpaper. This is what mainly differs widescreen monitors from regular monitors. If you try to apply a normal wallpaper to a widescreen monitor, stretching will occur.
