[edit] History

Jonathan Meiburg began Whu Gnu out of two previous musical ensembles: 'Mysterious Union' and the Lawrence Dale Bell High School Jazz Band. The original lineup of the band included Ken Evers-Hood, Joe Reeves, Bo Griffin, Mike Dow, and Jack Worthy. By the year 2000, the band had replaced Evers-Hood and Reeves with Lee Shields and Tony Rogers. Whu Gnu played numerous gigs in and around Texas with notable artists such as the Reverend Horton Heat, Okkervil River, and 'Party of Fives' Scott Wolf.

The band's first album Naked and Without Teeth, sold roughly 1000 copies before marriage and largess overcame the majority of the group's members. In 2003 Whu Gnu invited Meiburg to pursue his other musical outlets Okkervil River and Shearwater full time. Dow, Griffin, Shields, and Worthy are currently active in the Austin, TX music scene.
