When I'm Alone I Cry is a 1964 album from Marvin Gaye, one of several attempts of the singer to make a name for himself as a jazz vocalist. Motown chief Berry Gordy had never cared for Gaye's smooth-jazz renditions, which also did not go over well in concert.

After When I'm Alone I Cry was unsuccessful upon its release, Gaye finally balked under pressure to record more R&B and soul material. By the end of the decade had become one of the best-selling and most revered soul artists of his generation.
