WFRE (99.9 FM) is a radio station located in Frederick, Maryland, in the United States. It plays country music and is owned by Clear Channel Communications along with its sister station 930 WFMD. Despite the fact that the station is located approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) away from the two closest major cities (Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC), its strong signal (7,900 watts) reaches both major markets.
The WFRE calls can mean either "Free Country" which is WFRE's branding or "Free State" which is the state's nickname and where the free states began during the US Civil War.
Along with analog, WFRE broadcasts in HD Radio simulcasting in digital quality on HD-1, and a rocking country music feed on HD-2.
