West High was built in 1965. The school mascot is the Vikings.

• Twice a California Distinguished School, 1986 and 1996.

Has responded to changes in student population with increases in interdisciplinary studies, academic support programs and an increased use of technology.
Mentoring and academic support programs to assist student achievement like General Studies Support, Supplementary Support Classes, Project BEST for African-American male students and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MECHA) for Hispanic students.
Extensive offering of ROP classes on site and at the ROP Center.

Recently, there have been concerns about the health and safety of the school due to three students being hospitalized and one death due to staph/MRSA and an attempted kidnapping.
