[edit] In the Beginning

What most people would call worthless land, only one person ever dreamed of a great place dedicated to Saint Blaise. When Franchesco Masterelli first came to America to find a job, he found it in the little city of Brigham, Utah just outside of Salt Lake City. One night on Febuary 3rd (the feast of Saint Blaise) Franchesco Masterelli saw a vision of Saint Blaise building a wall for a church. Franchesco told his neighbors about the vision and one of his neighbors told him to become a priest. He then traveled again to the nearest catloic seminary which was 200 miles away and after years of training, he started construction of a new parish in Brigham, dedicated to Saint Blaise. The whole community from Saint Gregory, a nearby parish and also Father Franchesco Masterelli started construction of the first building, the Worship Center. Then other buildings began popping up rapidly such as the Saint Blaise School and of course, Saint Blaise Church.

[edit] Growing

As the parish grew larger and larger, the need for more priests was imminent, and the Bishop of Salt Lake City sent more priests to the parish including Father Patrick Wequatic. Father Masterelli was getting older with his health deteriorating, and by 2002 he died at Saint Blaise Hospital. After reading a passage Father Masterelli wrote in a journal, he appointed Father Patrick Wequatic as leader of the parish. Only about two months later Patrick Wequatic became Bishop of Saint Blaise. He pushed the parish forward in constructing a new Basilica to Saint Blaise and also announced a institution dedicated to Father Masterelli, Masterelli Institution of Utah, which is now nationally recognized as being one of the best institutions not only in Utah, but in the whole United States. Bishop Patrick Wequatic loved his Parish yet wanted to help another growing parish, Saint Gregory, which was nearby, and was the same parish that helped Saint Blaise grow. He lead Saint Gregory forward for two years until he returned to Saint Blaise Parish, not as a bishop, but Pope John Paul II made him Archbishop of Saint Blaise, because of his great acts to grow the cathloic population of Utah. While Bishop Wequatic was gone, Cardinal Nicholas LaFratta was supervising the construction of Masterelli Institute, yet many parishioners were unhappy with is method of donations and fundrasing being too "complicated" and "misleading".

[edit] Today

Today there is a total of sixteen buildings and also the current basillica of Saint Blaise and also over ten-thousand families. Saint Blaise currently teaches hundreds of students at Masterelli institute, and the 2007-08 school year has just begun. Arcbishop Wequatic became a Cardinal by Pope Bennedict XVI and right after he came back from Rome. Masterelli institute will also be enlarged with the Masterelli Technology, Art, and Theology buildings. Father Franchesco Masterelli has recently been called blessed and a canadate to become a Saint because of his vision of Saint Blaise and his acts to convert people to cathloic. Father Masterelli will always be remebered as a man who gave a hope to anyone who needed help, as a man who helped anyone who needed hope.
