Karger's most successful season was with the Red Sox in 1910, when he was 11-7 with a relatively high 3.19 ERA. Before that he compiled losing records despite better ERAs for second-division Cardinals teams. (WOR)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY

» August 11, 1907: In the 2nd game of a doubleheader, shortened to seven innings by prior agreement, St. Louis Cardinals' Ed Karger pitches a perfect game 4-0 against the Boston Doves. » August 27, 1907: Christy Mathewson fashions a 3-hit shutout over the Cardinals and driving in the only run with a double. Ed Karger takes the hard luck loss.

» December 12, 1908: The Cardinals are busy. First they get C Admiral Schlei from the Reds for pitchers Ed Karger and Art Fromme. Then they pack off Schlei, along with P Bugs Raymond and OF Red Murray, to the Giants for veteran catcher Roger Bresnahan. Bresnahan, a future Hall of Famer, will be the player/manager of the Cardinals for the next four years. Raymond lost 25 games in 1908, but a record 11 of them were by shutouts.

» June 27, 1911: In the 7th inning at Huntington Avenue Grounds, the A's Stuffy McInnis steps into the batter's box to lead off and hits Ed Karger's warm-up pitch for an inside-the-park home run while the Red Sox are still taking their positions. Boston manager Patsy Donovan's protests to ump Ben Egan, but Egan rejects the protest on the basis of Ban Johnson's new rule prohibiting warm-up pitches. The A's win, 7–3. Ban Johnson's time-saving rule, which declares that pitchers must throw as soon as the batter is in the box, is soon withdrawn.

(Donovan) "Music Is the greatest form of self expression that I've found. I don't know where I'd Be If My dad hadn't randomly stopped at a pawn shop when I was young and bought a cheap guitar for me to play. And ever since I started in th 7th grade I havent had a lesson, so everything I play feels very personal to me because I've developed my own style of playing that works for me."

"My mom was the singer and got me really into singing at a young age, and her and my Sister Courtney Have really been my main supporters and constantly are listening to my song ideas"

"My favorite band of all time would have to be Pink Floyd because my Dad And Mom Constantly played it to me and my sister Courtney from the time we were born until currently, and I think that really helped me get into music even more and develop an ear for it."

"I was tired of being In bands that Wouldnt let me branch off into different genres, and go different dirrections with the music. So I started Orphan City in 2007 and intended it to be Solo, haha plus people find it hard to work with me because I like to have control over the music and I'm a perfectionist, But I asked Annalea If im hard to work with and she laughed and said "no way, you just want the songs to be the best they can be"

"Music Is how im going to leave my mark. I hope the music That I make will be around after I'm dead and that people can get something out of it. And Know how passionate I was about it" I literally have a hundred songs on my computer that I've written and recorded that no one outside of my real close friends and family will ever hear. Those songs are just a way for me to express myself and really dont need to be heard, but I'm constantly writing and recording."

"I met Annalea through My Previous Project Madeara Frames and she called me and said how she still really wanted to do music with me and such and I asked her if she wanted to join orphan city and she got excited so I took that As a yes haha. We work really well together and have ideas that the other one may not of thought of."

"As Long as I'm breathing Orphan City will be my project. Even 60 years Down the road...If I'm alive that long. This Is finally a project that I feel great about because I feel the musical possibilities are endless. Annalea and I are very open minded people when It comes to music so we wont have any problems when it comes to trying new things and keeping our sound fresh.

And It's also a project that I can work on by myself without having to show 4 other band members and cross my fingers in hopes they Like it. When Annalea Leaves for college soon I can Continue to write and Play shows, but the cool part is she can still have just as much input. We are living in a crazy digital world haha, Because we have already talked about sending each other parts of songs and then talking about ideas and then she can record her piano and send it to me and I can add it to the song. So the music will keep going and I'm Excited to see what God has planned for us.

"Orphan City covers day to day relateable experiences in the lyrics and mixes genres of: Indie/ Electronica/ Folk/ Post Rock/ Ambient music, but doesn't limit the musical possibilities." [1]

[edit] History

  • Donovan Butts was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. He lived there untill the age of 11. He then moved to Marietta, Ohio with his parents and older sister, Courtney. He started playing music in 7th grade, shortly after his father bought him a guitar at a pawn shop. The self taught guitar player was part of many minor bands including: TPT, Leonardo Leonardo, and Madeara Frames.
  • Annalea Thompson was born in Marietta and has lived there since then. She met Donovan through joining the band Madeara Frames, in 2007.

Donovan was working on music for Orphan City when Medeara Frames broke up. Annalea showed further intrest in working with Donovan, so she join Orphan City with him.

[edit] Band Members

  • Donovan Butts (born February 14, 1988) - Lead Vocals, Guitar, Programming/ Keyboard, and Drums. He also records/ produces all the songs for Orphan City. He is also a proud Christian.

"Orphan City isn't Christian music, but I don't play negative music either. I praise God in prayers and in my daily life. I play music for God, because He's blessed me with the gift of music. I have such a diverse style in music that if I played Christian music, I'd feel limited to one subject. It's cool to think I'm just your average person whose a musician, but I have a strong relationship with Christ." (Orphan City Blog)

  • Annalea Thompson (born April 1, 1990) - Keyboards
  • Courtney Butts (born February 17, 1986) - Live Keyboards

[edit] Influence

Donovan gives Danny Elfman as a top musical influence. He is also influenced and inspired by Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello, Pink Floyd and Indian artists, The Radha Krishna Temple.

Annalea is influenced by Sufjan Stevens.

[edit] Musical Characteristics

Orphan City has a unique sound with each song they orchestrate.

  • "Icelandinc Conversations" is pulled together with a soft sounding panio, glockenspiels, vibraphones, and other bell instruments. It mixes real drums with glitchy electronic drum beats, completeing the dream like sound scape.
  • "Cardboard Passports" incorporates the more folk style of music they play, with the acustic guitar and piano sounds. The songs starts off slow and then it builds up untill the end.

"Cardboard Passports is about me (Donovan) feeling overwhelmed with everything going on around me. At the time, I was unmotivated because I lacked confidence in everything I did. I think it's a song that everyone can relate to." - Donovan

The sound of their other songs seem to follow the same orignal pattern, just like song titles them self.

[edit] Equiptment

Orphan City is curently working on their second EP, as a duel collaboration between Donovan and Annalea.
