Historically, China has pioneered the development of a number of weapons. Several of the traditional weapons are today practiced at the many schools of Chinese martial arts around the world. In modern times, the People's Republic of China has built a comprehensive military industrial base, and has developed indigenous designs for all manner of modern weapons. Chinese technology is viewed in most areas as lagging behind that of Europe and the United States, but many expect China to reduce that gap in the foreseeable future.
