[edit] Featured wrestlers

Since the game is the North American version of Japanese wrestling title Virtual Pro-Wrestling, each of the "fictional" wrestlers in the game are actually based on real-life wrestlers. Only their names were changed due to American copyright laws.

[edit] Leagues

As the title suggests, the player must select a wrestler of a certain company to do battle with the representatives of their own company, as well as other wrestling companies. Here are the leagues as they appear in the game:

  • World Championship Wrestling (WCW) (Red): The cream of the wrestling crop, this is where the big boys play, and they think they can take on the world!

WCW's representative wrestler is Hulk Hogan; WCW's unlockable wrestler is Jeff Jarrett.

  • Neo-Strong Wrestling (NSW) (Purple): A group of young athletes currently leading the pro wrestling world, its members adhere to the motto "Pro wrestling is the strongest martial art!" and often participate in various martial arts tournaments to prove their point.

NSW's representative wrestler is Dojo, and NSW's unlockable wrestler is Steel Talon.

  • Empire Wrestling Federation (EWF) (Yellow): Despite being one of the oldest groups in professional wrestling, they still believe that the sport should be two things; fun and extreme!

EWF's representative wrestler is Wu Fang, and EWF's unlockable wrestler is Major Tom.

  • Samurai Wrestling Federation (SWF) (Blue): They credit themselves with combining the styles of pro wrestling and the martial arts, and their matches are usually filled with powerful punches, combination moves, and quick tricks.

SWF's representative wrestler is Akira Manda, and SWF's unlockable wrestler is El Masquerade.

  • Dead or Alive Wrestling (DoA) (Orange): This independent group is the embodiment of the Old West, and proud of it. All of its members are veterans of Death Matches and illegal pit fighting.

DoA's representative wrestler is Puchteca, and DoA's unlockable wrestler is Shanghai.

  • Independent Union Wrestling (IU) (Green): Answering to no one, these athletes do what they want, when they want - which is why their fans love them!

IU's representative wrestler is Black Ninja, and IU's unlockable wrestler is Grizz Lee.

  • Virtual Pro Wrestling (VPW): A ring/arena skin made available after the completion of the season. Is where the Super Heavy and Super Jr. battles take place.
  • Super Heavy/Super Jr.: This is a hidden league within the game that can be reached once the championships from the other leagues have been unified. Your weight class will unlock the respective league.

The Super Heavy unlockable wrestler is Giant. The Super Jr. unlockable wrester is Jaguar.

[edit] Trivia

  • Pressing START instead of the X button (and vice versa) can give wrestlers alternate attires. In some cases, certain wrestlers revert to past gimmicks (for example, pressing START can turn the nWo "Hollywood" Hogan into the Red-and-Yellow "Hulk" Hogan, or pressing START can turn the black-and-white late '90s Sting into the multi-colored, blonde-haired classic Sting).
  • When Jeff Jarrett wins a Tournament or League Match, his name is displayed as "The All American".
  • Saladin's alternate attire has "DAW" on the front, which is the abbreviation for Dead or Alive in Virtual Pro-Wrestling. In WCW vs. the World, it is abbreviated "DoA".
  • Even though Sting is a playable character in the game, at the time this game was released, Sting had been in the midst of a year-plus long sabbatical from the wrestling ring, not having wrestled since WCW Fall Brawl in September of 1996 to WCW Starrcade in December of 1997.
