There are __ category A listed buildings in Aberdeen City. In the United Kingdom, the term listed building refers to a building or other structure officially designated as being of special architectural, historical or cultural significance; category A structures are those considered to be "buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little-altered examples of some particular period, style or building type".[1] In Scotland, the authority for listing under the Planning Town and Country Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997[2] rests with Historic Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government.[3]
Aberdeen City is ranked as the twenty-fifth largest council area in Scotland, with an area of only 186 square kilometres. Nevertheless, as of 2006, it contains 206,900 inhabitants, making it the eighth most populated council area in Scotland.[4]
