[edit] Career
[edit] Watford
Andrews (Keeper of the bees) began his career with Watford, making his debut in as a substitute in a 2-1 away victory against Bournemouth. He started the following game and made 27 more appearances in his first professional season. Early in the 1997/98 season, Andrews broke his ankle and subsequently missed the rest of the campaign. In his absence Watford was promoted to Division One and Andrews found himself behind a number of other strikers. He was loaned to Cambridge United, for whom he only played twice, and in February 1999 to Peterborough United, for whom he scored 4 goals on debut, a 5-2 win over Barnet. He earned a lot of positive comments during his time at Watford.
Upon being released from his contract in April 1999, Andrews moved into non-league football with St Albans City, Aldershot Town and Chesham United before being spotted and signed by Iain Dowie for Oldham Athletic in summer 2002.
[edit] Crystal Palace
In the summer of 2003, Andrews moved to Colchester United, for whom he played 36 times, scoring 16 goals. At end of the 2004 summer transfer window, Dowie, who had managed Crystal Palace to promotion the previous season, signed Andrews to bolster his Premiership squad.
Andrews found it very difficult to establish a first-team place. He was well down Palace's long strikers list in order of preference, and was even tested as a winger. Following the lack of opportunities, both parties decided to go their separate ways.
[edit] Coventry City
Shortly after this he signed with Coventry City. He had only scored one goal for Palace in his two seasons there, ironically against Coventry.
After having seen him play against Sheffield Wednesday. Brian Laws signed him on loan in time for their next game to fill in for the injured Wade Small on the right wing. Wayne made 9 appearances for the South Yorkshire team in which they only lost twice. He scored his only goal in the 11th minute of a Yorkshire derby against Barnsley in a 3-0 victory at Oakwell
On the 19 January 2007, Wayne began a one month loan spell at league one promotion contenders Bristol City and after coming on at half time, Wayne notched his first goal for the club against previous employers Oldham Athletic. Bristol City won the game 3 nil. He then continued this form by scoring City's only goal in a win away to Blackpool. This was arguably one of the most important goals in City's season as they finished only 2 points above Blackpool, clinching a promotion spot.
Andrews returned to Coventry where he failed to break his way into first team contention, and started only one game in the opening few games of the 2007/2008 season. He was sent on loan to Leeds United to help ease their striker shortage problem, joining initially on a one-month loan deal with the option to extend until the end of December, but has since returned to Coventry City.[1]
On 24 March 2008 it was confirmed that Andrews would be released by Coventry at the end of the 2007/08 season.[2]
On 27 March 2008 it had been announced that Andrews would join Bristol Rovers on loan for the rest of the season, up until when he will become a free agent.[3]
[edit] Trivia
Wayne, whilst at Crystal Palace, had an internet fan group called the WASG (Wayne Andrews Support Group) with over 20 members, who at the time got together to support Wayne as he was going through a tricky spell at the club. This support group, led by Dan Hackett, saw him score his one and only goal for the club, against Coventry, for whom he now plays.
Wayne also played a role in the film Mean Machine alongside fellow footballer Vinny Jones.
