Water Penny

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Water pennies are a type of segmented beetle that go through a complete metamorphosis. The young, which live in water, resemble pennies.[citation needed] The larvae feed off of algae. Presence of water penny larvae in a stream can be used as a test for the quality of the water. Among the pollution sensitivity categories sensitive, somewhat-sensative, and tolerant; water pennies belong to the sensitive category. Therefore, their presence along with other diverse phyla signifies good quality water.

As adults, water pennies do not live in the water.
