Washtenaw
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Washtenaw is a word of Native American origin. Opinions differ, but it may be Potawatomi for "large stream or river" (in reference to the Grand River, the headwaters of which are located within the original boundaries of Washtenaw County), or Algonquian language for "Far Country" (relative to the settlements around Detroit, Michigan.)
The name originally applied to the first county west of Detroit and has since been applied to:
- Washtenaw County, Michigan
- Washtenaw Avenue, a road in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ypsilanti, Michigan, Harper Woods, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois
- Washtenaw Community College, a community college in Ann Arbor, Michigan
