Washburn is a city in McLean County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of McLean County.[3] The population was 1,389 at the 2000 census. Washburn was founded in 1882 and became the county seat in 1883.
Washburn is home to the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center which focuses on the Expedition's winter with the Mandans and houses a full-scale replication of Fort Mandan and one of the expedition's canoes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (5.85%) is water.
[edit] Annual Tractor Trek
Washburn is the site of the annual Tractor Trek where 2,000 plus tractors make the journey from Washburn up into Manitoba, Canada. The event has been running since the early '60s and attracts thousands of tourists each August. The week long festivities are accompanied by markets and other miscellaneous events, such as the warthog race held on the Tuesday of the designated week. In the race, 225 of the finest warthogs of the area are released down the Main Street and eventually slaughtered for the main feast on the Thursday.
The American actor James Spader made a brief appearance during the 2007 Tractor Trek, hoping to bring Hollywood to North Dakota.[5]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,389 people, 557 households, and 407 families residing in the city. The population density was 781.8 people per square mile (301.3/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 370.9/sq mi (142.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.78% White, 0.72% Native American, 0.22% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.
There were 557 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,789, and the median income for a family was $54,250. Males had a median income of $47,500 versus $21,364 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,726. About 5.9% of families and 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 12.7% of those age 65 or over.
