This is a simple list of the planning names and letter codes for the lines. The letter codes were used during planning as well.[1] --NE2 19:27, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
- A: Shady Grove Route; Shady Grove Line; Rockville Route; Rockville Line; Connecticut Avenue Line
- B: Glenmont Route; Glenmont Line
- C: Huntington Route; Huntington Line
- D: New Carrollton Route; New Carrollton Line; Ardmore Route
- E: Greenbelt Route; Greenbelt Line; Mid-City Line
- F: Branch Route; Branch Avenue Route; Branch Avenue Line
- G: Addison Route; Addison Road Route; Addison Road Line
- H: Franconia/Springfield Route; Franconia/Springfield Line; Franconia Route; Franconia Line (now H/J)
- J: Springfield Route; Springfield Line; Backlick Route (not built)
- K: Vienna Route; Vienna Line; I-66 Route
- L: L'Enfant-Pentagon River Crossing Route; L'Enfant-Pentagon River Crossing; Pentagon Shuttle (added later)

As of December 1975, METRO construction was under contract along the portions of the network shown in Figure 5. Only one line -- the D line to New Carrollton -- was under construction in its entirety. At the other extreme is the E line to Greenbelt on which no construction has begun. Branches to Addison Road (G line), Huntington (C line), Franconia (H line), and Springfield (J line) are also not under construction at this time. The Branch Avenue (F line) is only barely begun, with construction reaching to Waterfront Station. The Rockville (A) and Glenmont (B) lines have slightly more than half of their length under construction, and the Vienna line (K) has somewhat less than half of its length under construction.
