Talk:Washington Heights, Manhattan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I removed the large print saying "Go Home Yuppies." Whoever put that up really needs to grow up a little bit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 156.111.196.212 (talk) 19:30, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
The crime situation in Washington Heights has changed. Moreover, the crime rate in the Heights is significantly lower than Harlem.
To Wit: the enormous gentrification of the Heights by young professionals and students.
I'd like to see what people have to say before changing the text.

[edit] Geography
I have adjusted the geography of Washington Heights to make it more accurate. I've added some salient features. I removed "affectionately known as "The Heights"", because all Heights are affectionately known as "the Heights"— Brooklyn Heights, Shaker Heights... I removed Inwood-related material, which has its own article [Inwood, Manhattan]], as it should, for New Yorkers don't confuse the two neighborhoods. I added a Reference.--Wetman 5 July 2005 23:00 (UTC)
Does anyone have a map of the relevant part of Manhattan showing exactly where Washington Heights is? --spiralhighway 15:29, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- There is no formal definition of NYC neighborhoods. Any map would only represent one view of what's inlcuded. Alansohn 22:37, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
If you go to the City Engineering Bookstore down by City Hall, you will find both maps and Commuity Board profiles that will show the exact definition of neighborhoods. Plus, The Encyclopedia of New York City from The New-York Historical Society has exact layouts and discriptions for all of NYC's neighborhoods - SSG Cornelius Seon (Retired) 12:41, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Bennett Park Link Needs Fixing =
"At the northern end of Washington Heights, near Fort Washingon Avenue and 183rd Street in Bennett Park is a plaque marking Manhattan's highest natural elevation, 265 ft (80.8 m) above sea level, at what was the location of Fort Washington." The article links Bennet Park to a Detroit ballpark. I lived in a building at 173rd Street and Fort Washington Avenue. 173rd and Ft. Washington Ave. was the southeast corner of the park. I don't remember it being called Bennett Park, but I don't remember any name for it. We just called it "the park." In any event, it was never located in Detroit. nrcbtm1@yahoo.com 6 June 2006
- I've added a link to the correct park.--agr 13:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
The park at 173rd and Fort Washington Ave is J. Hood Wright Park. Ten blocks north (at 183rd) is Bennett Park. nrcbtm is confusing the two. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevew316 (talk • contribs) 23:40, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Transportation =
When I lived in the area (1941 - 1957) the A line subway went uptown past the 175 and 181 street stations. I think the C line may have been a parallel line a few blocks to the east. The only trains at the 175 street station were the A express and the AA local. nrcbtm1@yahoo.com 6 June 2006
I am currently the Night Station Agent at 175th Street, and I can say that the A train - alone - travels north of 168th Street on the 8th Avenue Line. It has always been the only train to travel north of 168th Street because the Local Tracks stop soon thereafter in a small yard. The AA did terminate at 168th Street, but today the AA is a Memory - it became the K before it was sublimated into the CC, which was also changed to the current C. The C operates all day between Euclid Avenue and 168th Street, and is replaced by the A overnight which operates local the full length. - SSG Cornelius Seon (Retired) 12:48, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Points of Interest
There was a small light house next to the Hudson beneath the GW bridge. It was the subject of a childrens book. I don't remember the title or author.
I believe the motion picture about Malcolm X placed some key scenes at the Audabon Ballroom on St. Nicholas Ave. nrcbtm1@yahoo.com 6 June 2006
- I would hope they placed some "key scenes" there; it's where he was killed. Uucp 01:24, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

- Little Red Lighthouse has been added.--agr 13:05, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
There is now a great off-Broadway show called "In the Heights" that should be mentioned on this page.
[edit] Quisqueya Heights
I plugged Quisqueya Heights into Babel Fish, and the program was unable to translate the phrase. I then tried to translate just the first word, and again Babel Fish could not do it. Where do you get this phrase from, and what is the EXACT translation for "Quisqueya"??? - SSG Cornelius Seon (Retired) 12:07, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- I think there's no real translation into the English for this word, not even into Spanish; it's a reference to the Dominican Republic, see Hispaniola--213.0.80.195 08:14, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] History
Any one know what the majority population was before the influx of dominicans? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.202.70.125 (talk) 16:37, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Replace this awful photograph
I think that this picture should be replaced with a better one, or just removed. It's horrible. Congested (talk) 21:51, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Gang Violence
DDP (Domicans Dont play) and Patria are Domincan gangs and they are extremely prevalant in washington heigts. Gang violence has risin in the neighborhood because of them. Some kid got shot on his stoop by a shotgun because of this. Another was stabbed near his high school. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.202.92.79 (talk) 02:52, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
