This article included spurious claims that the rioters were members of leftist insurgents, the FMLN. At the time the rumors were, and many articles stated, that the rioters were right-wing Salvadoran contras trained by the CIA to disrupt the Sandinistas in neighboring Nicaragua. There was no appreciable FMLN graffiti and any such claim is propaganda.
