Warum? is the third piece of Robert Schumann's Fantasiestucke, preceded by Aufschwung and followed by Grillen. It was written along with the other parts of the Fantasiestucke in 1837. The piece is in D-flat major, major VI of the key of Aufschwung and has the tempo marking of 'Langsam und Zart' indicating that the work should be performed at a slow and tender pace. Warum? is german for 'why?' and was intended by Schumann to signify Eusebius's reflection on the excesses of Florestan in Aufschwung.[1] The piece proceeds with "gentle questioning" and ends with an "inconclusive answer."[2].
