[edit] Warrior Wing Chun

What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is a logical, scientific, yet simple martial art which provides both self-defence and fitness skills for people of all ages. It emphasises economical body mechanics; utilising efficient musculoskeletal structure within the techniques, which eliminates the need for muscular strength.

Legend has it that a Shaolin Buddhist Nun named Ng Mui invented [[Wing Chun], it was a fusion of White Crane and Snake techniques. She taught this style of Kung Fu to a young lady named Yim Wing Chun. Yim Wing Chun later taught this style of Kung Fu to her husband, Leung Bok Chao. In honour of his wife, Leung Bok Chao named the Kung Fu style Wing Chun.

Wing Chun was made popular by [[Yip Man], a native of Foshan on Mainland China, he fled to Hong Kong in 1949 after the Japanese occupation and was forced to teach Wing Chun in order to make a living. Yip Man taught many students including Moy Yat, Chu Shong Tin, Yip Bo Ching, Wong Shun Leung and his sons Yip Chun and Yip Ching. He also taught Bruce Lee who achieved world wide fame in the movie industry.

What is Warrior Wing Chun?

Warrior Wing Chun is an adaptation of Traditional Wing Chun. It is geared towards modern, realistic combat situations and incorporates locks, holds, restraining manoeuvres, known as Chin Na.

Warrior Wing Chun developed out of a special set of needs. In the security industry some situations did not require strikes, most of the time the assailant had to be restrained, so restraint and locking techniques were incorporated and applied to Wing Chun methods. This is where Warrior Wing Chun differs from traditional Wing Chun.

Although the system has been modernised and updated the ethics training and philosophy of traditional Wing Chun are preserved. Warrior Wing Chun follows a traditional syllabus with the student learning the traditional forms, there are also levels which relate directly to modern, realistic combat situations. Warrior Wing allows the student to learn traditional Kung Fu teaching and ethics but with a modern application.

[edit] Warrior Wing Chun Training

The core of the system consists of the traditional forms of Wing Chun:

Siu Nim Tao (Little Idea)

Chum Kiu (Bridge Seeking)
Biu Jee (Thrusting Fingers)
Muk Yan Jong (108 Wooden Dummy technique)
•Baat Cham Do (Butterfly swords,Wing Chun Knives)

THe Empty hand forms arm the student with the core techniques of Wing Chun and in the early stages help build power in stance, striking and evasion. In addition to the forms classes consist of Drill Training, Forms Practice, Application of Technique and also Role Play scenario where students are placed in realistic situations.

Class training will mainly take the format of:

Practice Of Basic Moves - This contains repeating the basic punch, defensive arms and movement in Wing Chun.

Simultaneous defend and strike – This will allow the student to practice the various combinations of defence and counter.

Training Drills – Though various drills this teaches the students the different elements of the defensive arm, sensitivity, power, when to attack etc.

Forms Practice – Practice and understanding the Wing Chun Forms. The student must practice and gain a proficient application and understanding of the form before beginning a new form.

Forms\Technique Application – This is where all the techniques learnt from the forms are put into practice and combined in various different ways in realistic situations. This will also involve free sparring and ‘Designated Victim’ training.

Role play Scenarios/Combat Drills – Students here have the chance to understand and act in various scenarios and builds on their Self Defence Skills.

The class will differ from student to student and is invariably dependent on their level and proficiency. The philosophy of the class is that of brotherhood, each Student is encouraged to help their ‘Kung Fu Brother’ and aid in any way in there training. This creates and promotes a feeling of community and enables students to train in a comfortable, relaxed environment.

[edit] The Birth Of Warrior Wing Chun

Warrior Wing Chun was devised by a practitioner from the UK, Ade Rhodes. He studied the Martial Arts from an early age with some truly respected Masters. These martial arts included Shaolin Fut Gar with Master Siew Yang Por, Chow Gar Praying Mantis with Master Paul Whitrod and Sifu Omor Khalid, Jiu Fa Men (Nine Method Boxing)with Master Chris Crudelli.

After a while training he then discovered a little known martial art, called Wing Chun, this was the art that he favored the most. He studied with various instructors , including Sifu Nick Smart, Sifu J Sidhu, Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe. He then he met a restaurant manager who was taught Wing Chun from his family back in Hong Kong. It was from him he studied the longest.

The style was originally called (and is still referred to) as 'Jung Si' which means 'Warrior'. The name Warrior is derived from many years spent either working in Close Protection (Bodyguard) or from countless confrontations and skirmishes while working as a Door Supervisor (Bouncer).

The effectiveness of Wing Chun was discovered early on and proved to be an efficient fighting and self defence system. He realised it was effective for any confrontation. Through economic use of movement meant the end to the confrontation was efficient and with little use of energy. He also realised some situations needed restraining techniques, so previous experience was dwelled upon and these techniques were incorporated into Wing Chun.

Whether someone had to be restrained or lethal rapid strikes administered, Ade discovered he now had the armoury to deal with all situations. He developed the techniques and formulated his own system of Wing Chun.

So through a traditional martial arts background Warrior Wing Chun was born. A style of Wing Chun that maintains and teaches traditional values, but applied to modern day combat situations.

[edit] Warrior Wing Chun and Priory Park ABC

Warrior Wing Chun helps to provide extra revenue for a rundown local community gym, Priory Park ABC. Priory Park is in dire need of refurbishment and extension which will help it better serve the local community. It is a non-profit making gym (Charity) and prides itself on turning otherwise troublesome local youths and turning them into worthwhile members of the community by instilling traditional values that come from the art of Boxing.

For years the Gym has been run tirelessly by a local ex-boxer named Paul Gough and various other ex-boxers and he has produced some local champions, Golden Gloves Champions and National Champions. Some ex-patriots of the Gym include Darren Macdermot (Macca, Current British Champion), Shaun Cooper (British IBA Champion) to name but a few. Priory Parks ambitions is to move on and create more champions and Olympic hopefuls and accommodate the 40 person waiting list of people who wish to train. Warrior Wing Chun is taught at the gym.

Warrior Wing Chun is proud to support Priory Park ABC.
