War of the Rats is a WWII novel written by David L. Robbins in 1999. The book is, contrary to popular belief, not based on a true story (see Heinz Thorvald article).
The movie Enemy at the Gates is partially based on this book.
[edit] Plot summary
The plot focuses on a 1942 battle between the Germans and the Russians set in Stalingrad, Russia. The battle is declared by the Germans to be "Rattenkrieg"; translated, War of the Rats.
Two high-ranking elite snipers, a Russian and a German, venture through the ruins of Stalingrad excessively with the goal of trying to kill the other. The two snipers, Army Chief Master Sergeant Vasily Zaytsev and SS Colonel Heinz Thorvald, are equally matched in both skill and tenacity, but an American woman, Tania Chernova, who is trapped in Russia complicates this extraordinary duel. Joining the Russian sniper's cadre, she soon becomes one of his most talented assassins, and perhaps his greatest weakness.[1]
