WALTER HARTUNG [1]
PERSONAL DATA:
Walt was born in New York City and raised on Long Island, N. Y. in North Bellmore and Smithtown. He graduated from Smithtown Branch High School in 1954 and Wagner College in 1958. He married Lillian Clausen of St. James, Long Island on December 12, 1959 in the Army Chapel at Ft. Bliss, TX.
While in the Army from 1958 to 1961, he was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, NJ and at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. During this time he learned how to pick up cigarette butts and, thanks to his math degree from Wagner, learned to construct computer simulation models of Army air defense systems. Walt soon learned that there was no great future in picking up butts, so he pursued a career in computers and systems analysis. Stochastic models, data collection and reduction systems, command and control systems, and defense telecommunication systems kept him gainfully employed for over thirty-eight years. In addition, between graduation and retirement, he managed to earn an MS in Math, marry the best friend of my childhood sweetheart, father two children, and be blessed with two lovely granddaughters, one of whom will be studying math at Auburn this fall.
They have lived in El Paso, TX, where we were married in Dec 59; Orlando, FL; Billerica and Westford, MA; Reston, VA; and in The Netherlands where he was a consultant.
Walt retired in 1999 to Sun City, SC and now enjoy a multitude of hobbies such as motor home touring, cycling, photography, Civil War History (needed for Southern living), computers and model railroading. They have a son Wally, a daughter Lisa, and two granddaughters, Michelle and Karen.
