Talk:Walhalla, Victoria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Have begun the process of cleaning up this page. Added in Section headers and started filling in with suitable content. Have done Geography and started History.
There is some discrepancy - between assorted books and web sites - as to when exactly Ned Stringer and party started exploring the creek, when gold was found and when Stringer made the claim at Bald Hills. To that end, I've left such dates general.
To be added:
- Approx number of mines in Walhalla and nearby locations at its peak
- Population estimates at peak plus number of hotels, schools, churches etc
- Battle to get a rail line to the town, then sad irony in it's final arrival coinciding with ending of viable gold mining. Railway used to take away most of town from 1910 onward.
- Plus re-write section on Landmarks, including adding in text on Long Tunnel Extended.
1.11.05 - AaronRichard expanded history section. Will add pictures from own collection shortly. Suggest we merge the Walhalla Cricket Ground article into landmarks section once it has been expanded.
