[edit] Use of native languages
While it is important to recognize regional and cultural distinctions, it is not appropriate to use native Hawaiian spelling in this article. These are the reasons:
1) The Waikiki Aquarium itself does not use native spelling on its Web page.
2) Spelling doesn't match the Wiki article title.
3) Common English dictionaries do not include native spelling, even as an alternative.
4) Uncommon spellings may confuse readers.
5) Words and concepts from foreign cultures usually do not include diacritical marks from native languages. Were this to be done in every case, it would make article creation difficult, and legibility reduced to the point of not displaying on many readers' monitors correctly.
6) Words with diacritical marks do not necessarily conjugate according to the guidelines of either language. E.g., if Hawaiʻi, then Hawaiʻian? Hawaiʻiesque? Hawaiʻinized?
7) Using native languages leads to politically charged confrontations about "ownership" of property and cultural legacies inappropriate to an encyclopedia.
