Vrykyl are fictional undead creatures from the Sovereign Stone trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Vrykyl are created ritualistically by Dagnarus' use of the Dagger of Vrykyl. They are the antithesis of the Dominion Lords, which were holy knights charged with the duty of protecting the Portals that connected the various races' homelands. Where the Dominion Lords are given their powers by the world's gods, the Vrykyl are given their power from the Void, which is defined as nothing but the lack of the gods.
Being undead, they have no need for food, drink, or sleep, so they derive their sustenance from the life essence of humanoid creatures. They do this by completing a kill with a knife made from their own bone, which simply drains the life of its victim and transfers it into its own body.
Upon the creation of these creatures with the Dagger of Vrykyl, the wielder can drink the blood of the victim and gain his or her life force, essentially giving protection against death and aging.
