Vranov nad Dyjí (German: Frain) is a market town in the Czech Republic with 888 inhabitants. It lies on the Dyje (Thaya) river in the South Moravia Region three km north of the Austrian border near Hardegg.

Vranov Castle

A castle at Vranov's location was first mentioned by Cosmas of Prague in 1100, while the nearby settlement was first mentioned as a market town in 1323. The Lichtenburg noble family took control of the castle and town during the 15th century. Between 1790-1882 the town had a manufactory for earthenware; after 1820 the manufactory began producing ceramic based on the methods of Josiah Wedgwood. The town's German population was expelled on May 24, 1945.
