Voluntary ambulance (New York City)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many hospitals in New York provide ambulances that respond to 911 calls. These are called voluntary hospitals. They should not be confused with volunteer ambulances. Volunteer ambulances are generally free-of-charge; voluntary ambulances charge for their services.
New York City is somewhat unique in that its emergency medical services are not all provided by a single organization. The Fire Department stations ambulances in certain areas, voluntary ambulances cover areas not served by the FDNY, and volunteer ambulances augment both in many neighborhoods.
