As a German Russian, I'm very excited to have found an encyclopedia page about this subject (totally by accident - linked from the front page). I think the two last paragraphs (as of Apr. 17, 2004) are not very correct.

"Many Russians carry hatred towards Volga Germans?" Not true (I grew up in Russia). If someone hates you for whatever other reason, your German-ness might come up - it's human nature, and Russia is not PC. Perhaps people who personally remember WWII, but they are old and rare.

Secondly, as of late 90's to "repatriate" to Germany, one not only has to speak some German, but speak the right Volga dialect! Please correct these when you get a chance. Thanks.

My apologies; I had just read in The Russians by Hedrick Smith that many Russians bore grudges against your people. Also, anybody (including you) can edit the page just by clicking 'Edit this Page'. You could correct the incorrect data yourself if you so wished. DO'Neil 09:05, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Why doesn't this article mention the fact that during the Soviet-Nazi alliance many Volga Germans were repatriated to Germany peacefuly? [[User:Halibutt|Halibutt]] 12:43, Oct 13, 2004 (UTC)

The article states there were 1.8 million Germans in the area. The article on Saratov states the same area had 800,000 instead. Which is correct? Maury 22:20, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] German citizenship based on ancestry

"Since the fall of the Soviet Union many Volga Germans have emigrated to Germany, which recognises the right of anyone with German ancestry to citizenship."

This is incorrect. Simply having German ancestry is not enough to claim citizenship. The reason why the Volga Germans can claim citizenship, as opposed to German-Americans, Brazilian Germans etc., is because they are classified as expellees of ethnic German origin or the spouses or descendants of such people. According to the Federal Republic's Law of Return, this makes them eligible for repatriation. XerKibard

Mainly because the Volga German ASSR ceased to exist as a political entity after 1941. There was some discussion of reviving the ASSR and then converting it to a federal Republic within the Russian Federation, but the fact is that there are very few Volga Germans left in the region, and most Volga German descendants in other regions (e.g. Kazakhstan, Siberia, and the Far East) have little desire to move back.
