A spectacular nighttime photo of an eruption of Mount Rinjani in Indonesia in 1994. Lava flowing from the crater is glowing orange, while dark clouds of volcanic ash and volcanic gases are rising upward. The upward motion of the heated gas and ash particles causes a buildup of electrical charge, resulting in lightning which frequently accompanies volcanic eruptions.
