VMware ThinApp (formely Thinstall) is an Application Virtualization suite developed by VMware, currently in public beta (open to anyone interested).

- Thinstall was originally developed by Thinstall Inc. but in January 15, 2008, VMware acquired Thinstall [1]
- VMware later used the code name VMware Project North Star while the product was in beta [2]
- On June, 10, 2008, VMware annouced that the final name for the product was going to be VMware ThinApp [3].

Most windows applications can be made portable with VMware ThinApp, some popular applications are:
- Firefox
- Opera
- Internet Explorer (5, 6 and 7)
- Safari
- Mozilla Thunderbird

- Microsoft Office (2003 and 2007)
- OpenOffice.org

[edit] Unsupported applications
On the other hand, some software cannot be made portable with VMware ThinApp, some examples to date (June, 2008), are:
- All non-windows software, like Linux or Mac OS X applications (obviously)
- Any software that requires device drivers to function properly (like daemon tools)
- Most Security Software
- Software already bundled with Windows and not available as a separated package
- Windows Live Messenger
