Vladimír Železný
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vladimír Železný (3rd March 1945 in Samara, Russia) is a media businessman and politician in the Czech Republic and European Parliament, the former founder of TV NOVA. As a media mogul with political influence, he has been compared to Rupert Murdoch.[1]
TV NOVA started to air in February 1994, quickly gaining share. However, in 1999 disputes between Železný and TV NOVA's investor - the CME company - errupted. CME subsequently suited both Železný and the Czech Republic for insufficient protection of its investments and won around 1 and 10,4 bn CZK respectively.
In 2002 elected to the Czech Senate, in 2004 to the European Parliament. He was unsuccessfully seeking re-election in the June 2006 Czech Parliament elections (Chamber of Deputies).
He is a founder of some political groups and parties. The latest called Independent Democrats (Nezávislí demokraté) founded in 2005.
