Vincent Cross is a songwriter, musician, and teacher based in New York City. He was born on August 22, 1971 in Dublin, Ireland. Cross spent his early childhood in Australia. His family moved back to Ireland when he was 10 years old. His parents opened a pub in Athlone. Cross picked up the guitar when he was 17 years old and played his first gig a few weeks later.
Vincent Cross performs original songs in the bluegrass tradition, alternating between guitar and mandolin. He fronts a bluegrass band Vincent Cross and Good Company lead singer and tenor singer and has been writing and performing since he was 17 years old.
After finishing secondary school, Cross moved to London seeking out the Bohemian lifestyle idealized in Jack Kerouac's writings. In the early 1990's he started his first bluegrass band The Hairy Lizards. Cross moved back to Dublin, Ireland in 1995 and spent six months touring with Johnny Carrol's country show band. he later joined the burgeoning singer-songwriter scene in Dublin, sharing the stage with Paddy Casey, Damian Rice, and Glen Hansard.
Cross visited New York City in 2006 and married. He rekindled his love affair with bluegrass music which he had stopped playing in the mid-1990’s. He now performs in venues that cater to the growing interest in roots music including Banjo Jim's, Freddie’s Backroom, The Parkside Lounge, and the Hill Country.
On May 8th, 2008, Cross performed for [Odetta] at a tribute to her life and work at Banjo Jim's in the East Village. He and his band members performed bluegrass music for a small enthusiastic audience that included Odetta, "D. A." Pennebaker, and Wavy Gravy, host for the evening.
Cross has been recorded on two limited releases: Inundation, and " ," compilations of singer-songer writers from around the world including Ron Sexsmith and Hot House Flowers.
He has released two EP's: Vincent Cross (2001) and Vincent Cross and Good Company(2006). He is presently recording an album of his songs for release in 2008.
