The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) was the government department that operated the New South Government's railways until the establishment of the Public Transport Commission in 1972. It was sometimes called the New South Wales Railways.
[edit] History
While New South Wales was still a colony, the railways in the colony were the responsibility of two private companies under government employment. These were known as the Sydney Railway Company (commenced 1849) and the Hunter River Railway Company (commenced 1853). These companies were in charge of constructing the railway tracks in New South Wales. In 1854, the inadequacy of these companies led to the appointment of three government commissioners whose responsibility was to see over the construction of the railway tracks.
The NSWGR built all of their track to the 4 ft 8½ in (1,435 mm) standard gauge.
The NSWGR ran their first train in 1855 from Sydney Terminal to Parramatta (now Granville).
