Talk:VIA pc-1 Initiative

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article should have some reference to the Geekcorps Desert PC project in Mali, which this product was at least inspired by... That project was conceived of by me (Ian Howard) and contributions by Sebastian Herschell and other Geekcorps volunteers. A purpose built linux distro, Kunnafonix was adapted for this system (that was programmed by Kasper Souren). Geekcorps built their system using EPIA based computers for rural off-grid sites and involved VIA in this project. Wayan Vota, now of OLPC news coined the term "Desert PC". The Geekcorps system was awarded a tech laureate by the tech museum. VIA later developed the PHD and donated 12 (check) to Geekcorps. This system is virtually identical to the Desert PC. The PHD was an initiative of the PC-1 program by VIA. VIA staff visited the geekcorps project in late 2005.
