Talk:Ventura, California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't know who made this comment below? One thing that caught my eye was this person's comment about the "Demographics." I don't know the person's intention, but I did find it offensive. This person felt unsafe? Why? The percentage of non-White residents? The comment should be removed. I will take the comment as color-blind racism, but at the same time, unacceptable.
As much as I love the Ventura area, I recently traveled there on business and was saddened to find a large number of homeless people lining the beautiful beaches and in the state park. I'm not sure what is causing this rise in homelessness in the area, but I think it should be noted in the Demographics discussion as I felt unsafe at times riding my bicycle along the paths. V-town is the best city in the world and no one can argue that.
The entry for Ventura, California states that Olivos was granted the property for the Olivos Hacienda by the Spanish gov't in 1841. Pretty sure that by 1841 Mexico was independent from Spain & that a Spanish land grant in that year would have no validity. Could the year given in the entry be incorrect?
RM
- You're right. Mexico gained independence in 1821. I checked http://www.ventura-usa.com/about/index.cfm?action=heritage and it just says that the land grant was given in 1841, but it doesn't say by whom, although a reasonable assumption would be Gov. Juan Bautista Alvarado. howcheng {chat} 06:50, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Highway Link Between Ventura and Los Angeles
After consulting long-time residents and viewing photos from CalTrans and other sites, I have corrected the article's statement that travel from Los Angeles was slow and difficult until the "Ventura Freeway" was completed in 1969. That road, Highway 101, was a four-lane (and often six-lane on gradients) expressway that was completed by CalTrans in 1959. A photo from CalTrans can be viewed at: http://gbcnet.com/ushighways/US101/101pics9.html
My corrected text is: "...until the completion of a four-lane expressway (US Highway 101) over the Conejo Grade in 1959. This route, now further widened and improved by 1969, is known as the Ventura Freeway, which directly links Ventura with the Los Angeles metropolitan area."
The original Highway 101 was built over the Conejo Grade in 1930, and it was a two-lane concrete roadway, requiring very careful steering and braking on the downgrades.
The main article also neglects to mention another link from the Los Angles area: a four-lane expressway (101 ALT) that has existed for more than forty years along the coast, through Oxnard, to Santa Monica.

Additional note on US 101: starting in the late 1970s, IIRC, it was upgraded to 6 mainline lanes, with 2 auxiliary lanes in places, and 2 truck lanes on Conejo Grade. This is when the freeway was jogged slightly south in Camarillo so the double row of eucalyptus trees could remain.
[edit] Templete: Community Infobox
What happened to the community infobox? --Hersch 14:24, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- According to Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 January 7#Template:Infobox_Community it got obsoleted by {{Infobox City}}. I'll stick that one in. howcheng {chat} 17:16, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Huh. Had no idea.. that totally slipped by my attention. Thanks for noticing the logs, bud.

[edit] Integration of Montalvo
The headline for the integration of Montalvo, Ventura, California links here, and I think it's an obvious merge. Someone just go ahead and do it.

[edit] Film and Television
It might be nice to add more cultural references, such as movies and television. I'm just brainstorming here, feel free to add, and move the list once it's big enough... Trisweb 21:47, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- Little Miss Sunshine - The scenes of Rodondo Beach, California were actually shot in Ventura, California along Interstate Highway 101 near the California Street exit.
[edit] Olivas Adobe - Rancho San Miguel
The article states that Rancho San Miguel (The Olivas Adobe) was 48,611 acres. In reality, the land grant was 4,600 acres, the smallest land grant in Ventura County.

[edit] Points of interest
As a native Venturan I cleaned up this section of the article a bit. It was filled with improper grammer and subjectivity. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 169.232.83.31 (talk) 05:10, 3 April 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Assessment
A while ago, an editor who was apparently doing assessment for WikiProject Cities rated this article as Start-Class. But that same editor also changed an earlier B-Class assessment WikiProject Southern California had given the article. I changed the Southern California assessment back to B so as not to undo the SoCal assessor's work, but didn't touch the Cities assessment. Instead of changing another WikiProject's rating without discussion, I think it's a better idea to bring the issue up on the relevant WikiProject's talk page. szyslak (t, c) 21:28, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
FWIW: On November 17, 2006, BlankVerse assessed the article as "B" for the SoCal project. Then, on March 19, 2007, Derek.cashman assessed it as "Start" for the Cities project, and also changed SoCal's rating. szyslak (t, c) 21:31, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:VenturaSeal.jpg
Image:VenturaSeal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
