Vehicle registration plates of Thailand

Thailand vehicle license plates (Thai: แผ่นป้ายทะเบียนรถ or หมายเลขทะเบียนรถ or simply ทะเบียนรถ) are the license plates displayed on most motorized road vehicles in Thailand, as required by law. Thai license plates show the province where its owner (a person or company) is located when register.

The current Thai car license plate format, used since April 1, 1997 (2540 B.E.)[1], have two consonants of the Thai alphabet, 1-4 numbers (1-9999) and a small Thai name of the province that it registered at bottom. (Ex. กค 8 ตาก; กค 88 ตาก; กค 888 ตาก; กค 8888 ตาก).

Some two Thai consonants are not use because they are bad words when spelling. For examples, "จน" means poor, "ตด" means flatulence, and "ศพ" means dead human body.

There are special plates for auction in Thailand.[2] Special plates are 301 numbers per one initial for 1-7 seats private automobiles. They are black text with graphic design background for its province, not white background like typical plates.

The current style of Thai motorcycle license plate have three lines. First line is three Thai consonants, second line is small Thai province name, and third line is 1-3 numbers (1-999).
Some three Thai consonants are not use because they are bad words when spelling.

The current style of Thai bus/truck (most songthaews are include) license plate have two numbers, hyphen, four numbers (0001-9999) and a small Thai province name at bottom.

Military and Police plates also exist.
Police plates are in dark red background, with white logo and five digits numbers.
